  First, grind away any cracks on the head of the stainless steel storage tank. After grinding, if the resulting pits are within the allowable range, no weld repair is required and the tank’s classification will not be affected. Otherwise, weld repair will be necessary.

  The location of surface crack defects is determined by liquid penetrant testing. After welding repairs are completed, the repaired weld seam and surrounding materials are inspected. Subsequently, another penetrant test is conducted to verify compliance. The welding repair is performed using tungsten inert gas (TIG) arc welding. It is advisable to employ segmented backstepping or skip-welding techniques, using small current parameters and multi-layer, multi-pass welds without oscillation. To prevent overheating of the weld seam, water cooling measures can be adopted.

  Use a conical grinding wheel mounted on an angular grinding wheel holder to grind and remove defects from stainless steel storage tanks. Pay attention to ensuring that the grinding grain direction of the wheel is perpendicular to the length of the crack. If the defect is deep, consider drilling crack-arresting holes at both ends of the defect to prevent the crack from expanding during the grinding process.

  According to the inspection results, among the stainless steel storage tanks that underwent comprehensive inspections, cracks were found in the head-to-shell weld seams. These problematic weld seams all exhibited varying degrees of undercutting.
